The training

Educational objectives:

Drawing from a live model is a fundamental exercise in art education. It allows students to simultaneously develop their observational skills, understanding of anatomy, ability to construct the human form, and skill in graphically capturing movement.

This course explores the human body through drawing, combining direct observation of a live model with an understanding of anatomy. The goal is not merely to reproduce what is visible, but to understand the elements that make up the figure: the skeleton, joints, muscle mass, proportions, axes, balance, and movement.

In Venice, this approach is rooted in the tradition of the fine arts and in a particularly rich history of the representation of the human body. From the academic study of the body to the freer explorations of contemporary art, the live model allows students to develop a personal perspective based on observation, sensitivity, and an understanding of form.

Over the course of three days, participants will alternate between short and long poses, analytical exercises, anatomical studies, sketches, and more in-depth drawings. The work will gradually focus on the overall construction of the figure, proportions, axes, joints, body masses, and the rendering of movement.

Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between anatomical structure and graphic expression: understanding the body in order to better detach from it, simplify, emphasize, or interpret certain elements.

In the spirit of Campus MaNa Venezia, this course combines the study of the fundamentals of academic drawing with a sensitive and contemporary approach to the live model.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Observe and analyze the general proportions of the human body;
  • Identify the main anatomical and joint landmarks;
  • Understand the relationship between the skeleton, muscle mass, and silhouette;
  • Construct a human figure using axes, volumes, and anatomical landmarks;
  • Use the line of action to convey posture and movement;
  • Understand the concepts of balance, support, weight, and counterweight;
  • Create quick sketches based on short poses;
  • Develop a more structured drawing based on a long pose;
  • Convey the body’s volumes through line, values, shadows, and contrasts;
  • Observe and depict the major anatomical structures;
  • Use anatomy as a tool for understanding, rather than as a mere accumulation of details;
  • Develop a personal and expressive approach to life drawing;
  • Acquire a working method that allows you to continue your anatomical studies and life drawing after the course.

Training content

The course alternates between observing live models, demonstrations, anatomical studies, quick sketches, and detailed drawings.

Participants are gradually guided through the process of rendering the human figure, from initial observation to a detailed analysis of volumes and anatomical structure.

The work draws on various graphic tools to allow participants to experiment with different ways of rendering the body: line, contour, hatching, tonal values, light and shadow, mass, and simplification of forms.

The goal is to develop an eye capable of moving from what is seen to what is understood, and then from what is understood to a personal graphic interpretation.
