The Program

Learning objectives

3D, and in particular filament deposition modeling, is becoming an essential tool in the workshops of designers and interior architects. It offers the possibility of creating models, testing ideas, prototyping, and even producing objects that are both aesthetic and functional.

To take full advantage of this technology, it is essential, in addition to mastering traditional modeling and manufacturing techniques, to learn 3D modeling tools and the use of 3D printers.

At the end of the training, the trainee will be able to:

  • Understand the culture of additive manufacturing, illustrated by concrete examples from artists, designers, and architects.
  • Know the essential rules for designing shapes suitable for 3D printing.
  • Use the tools and follow the steps necessary to transform an idea into a 3D printed object.
  • Move from an experimental phase to the creation of an object or a collection of objects.

Essential equipment for participants:

  • Laptop
  • Very important: a mouse!
  • Modeling software mastered by the participant (on our side, we mainly use rhinoceros 3D)
  • The latest version of the ORCA slicer software
  • Layout software
  • Small equipment: Sheets / pencils / pens / ruler / caliper
  • On site, all types of everyday objects can be collected, broken or not, to work on them with printed elements.
Examples: glasses, pots, cups, pens, glass jars, etc.

Content of the program

This workshop will address the limits and possibilities of 3D printing by wire deposition as a source of inspiration. Between the modeling of a shape in 3D and its manufacture, the parameterization phase is essential. The specific settings of the slicing software offer the possibility of diverting shapes, functions, textures and patterns, thus allowing varied experiments. Like a craftsman exploring his tool to extract a personal and relevant bias, Bold-Design will invite participants to manipulate different parameters to develop a unique aesthetic, a sensitive and functional object, or even a collection of objects.

The creations can be fully printed in 3D or partially, by associating them with materials, objects or fragments sourced on site. 3D printing will also make it possible to design object complements, adapted to precise shapes and dimensions, highlighting the ability of this technique to enrich and transform existing objects.

Day 1

Morning

  • Presentation of Bold Design
  • A brief history of 3D printing
  • Presentation of the 3 most widespread 3D printing technologies
  • Presentation of inspiring projects by designers, architects and artists
  • Discovery of the Campus MaNa FabLab and review of 3D printers and how they work
  • Loading filaments and launching a test 3D print
  • Presentation of best practices for designing shapes and objects for 3D printing

Afternoon

  • Presentation of the different parameters to know in slicing software
  • Collective creation of a common sampler, serving as a basis for inspiration to explore the various formal, structural, tactile possibilities, as well as the patterns and textures offered by this technique

Day 2

Morning

  • Review of existing objects selected and brought back by participants
  • Collection session on campus (in interior and exterior) to choose and determine interesting choices for the rest of the workshop
  • Reflection through drawing, collage, photography to imagine interventions on these objects
  • First individual phase then pooling and formation of groups based on the proposals
  • First phase of experiments applied to projects
  • Point with participants to exchange ideas
  • Selection of a strong bias per group
  • Measurement phase of objects, fragments collected
  • Modeling of proposals paying attention to compatibility with the printing technique
  • Printing of first tests

Afternoon

  • Round table on each person's progress
  • Analysis of the first steps taken in order to iterate and improve the proposals
  • 3D printing in parallel

Day 3/ Morning and afternoon

  • Day of modeling and 3D printing of samples
  • Research
  • Tests and iterations to validate details, assemblies and textures

Day 4/ Morning and afternoon

  • Day of modeling and printing in parallel with the final objects

Day 5

Morning

  • Photoshoots, photo editing to keep visual traces and feed the project notebooks
  • Setting up a scenography for the presentation of the projects
  • Printing the notebooks and binding

Afternoon

  • Exhibition of all the experiments and samples as well as the results accompanied by a small booklet including: notes of intent, annotated sketches, screenshots, photos. Learners will be invited to make videos of the 3D prints for their documentation and archiving. The production of these presentation elements will be done in parallel with the development and production of the projects.
  • Tidying up the FabLab

Details

Julien Benayoun or William Boujon, designers and co-founders of Bold Design

Founded in 2009, the Bold Design studio, led by William Boujon and Julien Benayoun, has been tracing a unique path in the creation of objects, furniture and spaces for 15 years. Friends and partners since their studies, they combine complementary visions to create a design that combines style and technique, audacity and simplicity, research and transmission.

The studio promotes a constant dialogue between ideas, materials and humans, a crossroads of universes that gives rise to innovative projects. Since 2016, it has distinguished itself with its 3D printing achievements, such as vases made from plant fibers and micro-architecture projects using leather waste, works rewarded by the "New Worlds" program of the Ministry of Culture.

In 2019, several of their works were acquired by the Centre National des Arts Plastiques (CNAP), marking an institutional recognition that was confirmed with the "Symbiose" exhibition in 2021. Since 2018, the studio has continued its experiments in Drôme, at 8Fablab, where it explores 3D printing of sustainable materials such as earth.

Passionate about craftsmanship and traditional know-how, William and Julien are participating in 2023 in the “VISION ET TRADITION” residency program, co-organized by the Institut Français and the Institut d’Amérique Latine during Mexico Design Week. In collaboration with Mexican master basket maker Cirilo Martinez, they explore the contemporary uses of natural fibers such as wicker and rattan.

Through workshops for students and professionals, they highlight the importance of collaboration and sharing know-how, convinced that dialogue and collective experience enrich the practice of design.

Bold Design is a versatile design agency, constantly monitoring. It places social and environmental issues at the heart of its work, regularly collaborating with eco-design agencies to anticipate choices related to manufacturing processes and materials. Without a preferred technique or material, the duo chooses the methods best suited to each project, working closely with the client and team members, while relying on a network of experts with diverse skills.
