The training

Educational objectives:

Venice is not just a city-museum: it is one of the great centers of artistic creation in European history. For centuries, its unique position between East and West, its openness to trade, and its political identity have fostered the emergence of a profoundly original artistic culture.

This two-day course invites you to discover Venice as an artistic capital, exploring the major periods that have shaped its identity: from the splendor of the Venetian Republic during the Renaissance, through the golden age of Venetian painting and the major artistic transformations of the 18th and 19th centuries, to Venice’s place in modern and contemporary art.

Painting will take center stage, with a study of the great masters of the Venetian school—Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Tiepolo—and the characteristics of their artistic language: color, light, texture, landscape, and the depiction of the human form. The collections of the Gallerie dell’Accademia, in particular, offer a remarkable journey through the Venetian school, from the 14th to the 18th century.

But Venice’s artistic history does not end with the Renaissance. The city also became a laboratory of modernity, and later a major hub of international creativity with the Venice Biennale, whose exhibitions have helped cement the city’s place in the history of contemporary art.

This course thus invites participants to view Venice in a new light: as a living work of art, where palaces, churches, scuole, squares, collections, and exhibitions all bear witness to an exceptional artistic history.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the major periods in Venice’s artistic history.
  • Understand the distinctive characteristics of the Venetian school.
  • Place the major artists and movements in their historical context.
  • Recognize the characteristics of Venetian painting: color, light, texture, and composition.
  • Understand Venice’s role in artistic exchanges between the East and the West.
  • Analyze a work of art based on historical, formal, and iconographic criteria.
  • Relate a work of art to its political, cultural, and religious context.
  • Understand the evolution of Venice’s role in modern and contemporary art.
  • Develop a personal and well-reasoned interpretation of the works studied.
  • Establish a framework for continuing to explore Venetian art independently.
