The training

Educational objectives:

The 16th century represents one of the most brilliant periods in Venice’s artistic history. Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese are its three leading figures: three personalities, three artistic styles, and three ways of creating a dialogue between color, light, space, and narrative.

This two-day course offers an exploration of Venetian Renaissance painting through these three great masters, placing them within the artistic, political, and cultural context of the Most Serene Republic. Today, the Gallerie dell’Accademia houses a major collection of Venetian painting, allowing visitors to view the works of Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese in a single exhibition itinerary.

Titian will be examined as one of the central figures of 16th-century Venetian painting: portraiture, religious painting, mythology, the sensuality of the material, and his exploration of color. His long career also served as an essential point of reference for subsequent generations.

With Tintoretto, Venetian painting became more dynamic and theatrical. Bold compositions, perspectives, the movement of bodies, and contrasts of light all contribute to a deeply personal artistic language. His *Miracle of the Slave*, commissioned for the Scuola Grande di San Marco, marked his public emergence on the Venetian art scene.

Veronese, for his part, developed a spectacular and monumental style of painting, in which architecture, colors, figures, and narratives are organized into vast compositions. *The Banquet at Levi’s House*, housed at the Gallerie dell’Accademia, stands as one of the most emblematic examples of this ability to combine theatricality, architecture, and communal life.

Beyond the study of these three artists, this course aims to help students understand what makes Venetian painting unique: the role of color, light, painterly texture, movement, and the ability to create atmosphere.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Place Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese within the history of the Venetian Renaissance.
