This intensive four-day workshop offers a deep dive into the world of wood embroidery, structured around three key phases that combine technical knowledge with hands-on practice. Under the guidance of the embroiderer from Jean Brieuc Atelier, participants will learn the foundational principles of rare techniques, developed and passed down within a workshop of excellence.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
This workshop offers a complete immersion in wood embroidery, conceived as a dialogue between material, design, and technique. It is designed for those who wish to acquire precise, demanding skills and apply them to contemporary practice.
The workshop begins with a presentation of the work of Jean Brieuc Atelier, its history, and its collaborations.
Participants then explore the fundamentals of wood: choice of species, material constraints, veneering, and the principles of marquetry. The work continues with gluing techniques, surface preparation, and finishing. Here, design takes center stage. From motif conception to drilling preparation, participants will receive explanations of the various stages involved in designing the provided supports. Time will be set aside for drawing to develop their embroidery designs, based on the pre-drilled templates provided.
As always, this workshop places a strong emphasis on hands-on practice. Specific supplies are introduced, essential knots and stitches are taught, and then the embroidery is executed on wood using the pre-drilled templates.
The designs are based on iconic projects (Mille-Fleurs, Orient Express, collaborations with Léa Zeroil) while allowing each participant freedom of interpretation in the choice of colors and the pairing of beads and wood. A variety of bases allows for a learning pace tailored to each participant’s individual speed.

Originally from Brest, in Brittany, Jean Brieuc Chevalier initially pursued a career in science before training in cabinetmaking, earning a CAP, a BMA, and then a DMA. In 2012, he founded his studio in Angers, giving tangible form to a longstanding passion for wood and sewing—two fields he has explored together since his earliest professional experiences.
From this hybrid approach emerge unique pieces, at the intersection of woodworking and embroidery techniques. Very early on, his work attracted the attention of architects and designers. Collaborations with Aurélie Rimbert, Léa Zeroil, and the OUD studio gradually enriched his approach and established a distinctive signature.
The year 2021 marked a turning point with his participation in the Salon Révélations, where he met architect Maxime d’Angeac. This encounter led to the creation of the headboards for the new Orient Express, now on display at the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris.
In 2025, the studio took part in the exhibition Les Nouveaux Ensembliers and created several pieces for the architects of Studio OUD. That same year, Jean-Brieuc Chevalier was honored with the Prix Talent d’Exception for Intelligence de la Main, awarded by the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation. His Mille-Fleurs screen, made entirely of marquetry and embroidery, will be presented at Homo Faber in Venice in September 2026.
At the same time, the workshop is developing collaborations with textile designers Lily Alcaraz and Léa Berliez around wooden weaves integrated into furniture and interior design projects, notably for Cartier boutiques.
