Educational objectives:

Transitioning from textile to paper as a medium of expression, Sandrine Beaudun discovers a true dialogue between material and artistic expression. Paper serves as a guiding thread to explore fibers and plants used in its creation.

By the end of the training, the participant will have assimilated:

Acquisition of knowledge about the fibers used and techniques necessary for creating vegetable paper
Introduction to the Japanese papermaking process
Contemplation of paper as a support or work of art
Technical knowledge to produce two vegetable inks and dye fibers in the mass

Training content

Japanese washi vegetable paper.

The training focuses on the creation and production of sheets of vegetable paper through an introduction to the traditional Japanese technique of making washi paper and the use of two Asian fibers: «Kozo» and «Lokta».

It also involves connecting with the energetic dimension of plants through color, learning fiber dyeing in the mass to create colored sheets.

The methods employed include sessions of historical and technical information, personal practice, observation, exchanges, and sharing.

Personalized guidance will enable each participant to learn at their own pace and develop their own creative space.

After studying surface textile design, Sandrine Beaudun worked on creating prints for haute couture, decorations for tableware and

the development of trend books for Parisian style offices.

In 2008 she intuitively felt the need to return to the question of the medium, and to question it, as a fundamental and more personal source of expression.

She then learned the Japanese manufacturing technique for sheets of paper and more particularly Kozo fiber (Japanese mulberry).

The “leaf” becomes for her a field of experiences and encounters with living things at their most creative, where imagination and creation can be expressed.

The “leaf” becomes moulted, skinned and creates work both through what constitutes it and through the time of its creation.

It is then a process that takes place, a physical dialogue that takes place

with the material from manufacturing to exhibition.

Methods used

Historical and technical information on paper manufacturing, definition of Washi, vegetable paper
Samples of raw raw material (kozo) at different stages of processing (branches, sapwood, dry raw cooked fiber, etc.) in order to visualize the different stages of cellulose extraction.
Iconographic support of the different trees, then the stages from picking to cooking the fibers.
Sample sheets of paper illustrating the possible fields of application and what will be explored during the internship; thin, thick, regular, textured, openwork, engraved, calligraphed, printed sheets.
Tools specific to the traditional Asian manufacturing technique of the sheet of paper; the shape, the sieve, the cover, the stick..
Placement of each participant in front of the paper vats with the tools adapted for their practice of the different techniques proposed.
Personalized artistic advice on each person's production.
Repetition and readjustment of the gesture of each participant with personalized support from the artist; listening and observing each person’s body in space, managing emotions.
Distribution: 30% theory and 70% practice.

Monitoring and evaluation procedures

Note-taking by participants of the historical and technical parts.
Creation of at least one “sample” sheet per technique and for each person.
Taking regular personal notes on your feelings about the experiment, your sensations, your emotions, etc.
Time for collective sharing and observations, feedback and presentation of the fruit of one’s practice to others.
Validation of acquired knowledge by a mini questionnaire at the end of the course.
