The Program

Learning objectives

This training offers a complete immersion in the unique world of lava enameling, a rare skill that combines technical rigor, artistic expression, and respect for the constraints of the material.

At the end of the training, the trainee will be able to:

  • Describe the process of lava enameling
  • Meet specifications
  • Prepare a piece for enameling
  • Adapt tools and prepare an enameling kiln
  • Enamel lava

Content of the program

The first phase of the training focuses on understanding the material: lava rock. Through a theoretical and practical introduction, trainees discover the properties of this volcanic rock, its reaction to heat, its specific characteristics regarding enamel adhesion, as well as the possibilities, but also the limitations, it imposes on the creative process.

Once these fundamentals are acquired, each participant is invited to engage in a real-life professional situation, working from a sample client specification. This document presents a context, constraints, and objectives to be met. Based on these elements, the trainee is encouraged to design a graphic proposal, taking into account both the desired aesthetic and the technical realities specific to enameling on lava.

This creative translation phase allows participants to address the challenges of design applied to surface design, while developing personal reflection on composition, color, and functionality.

Once the proposal is approved, it is then translated onto the lava through a drawing, then implemented through the various stages of glazing. Participants are guided through the glazing process, from color selection to application, all the way to firing.

Each trainee will leave with their own glazed piece, designed and crafted from start to finish, reflecting a comprehensive approach combining intention, expertise, and experimentation.

This training offers a hands-on approach to the craft, while fostering the ability to interpret the material and the rigor essential to the practice of glazing on lava.

Details

Lydia Belghitar

Lydia, co-founder of Studio Ler alongside Jessica Richard, has always been driven by a deep passion for creation. Drawing, in particular, plays a central role in her career and has largely shaped her professional path. After seven years of design studies, punctuated by experiences alongside major figures such as Mathieu Lehanneur and Pierre Favresse, she worked freelance before joining Ikea, where she worked for six years as an interior designer on various development projects.

In 2015, she launched Studio Ler with her husband Renato, a stonemason. They both discovered the world of lava stone and its enameling, a material with rare aesthetic and technical qualities. Eager to perfect their skills, they settled in Auvergne and trained at the Volvic School of Architecture. There, they developed a unique artistic language based on color, material, and experimentation.

Renato's death in 2018 profoundly disrupted this shared adventure. However, she decided to continue developing the studio alone, driven by renewed creative energy and a desire to honor their initial vision. She then moved the studio to Brittany, to Saint-Nicolas-du-Pélem, in a larger space conducive to creation, transmission, and innovation.

Studio Ler became a full-fledged lava enameling workshop, while maintaining a dual identity of craftsmanship and design. This unique approach allows each project to be considered holistically, from raw materials to formal design, combining traditional expertise with a contemporary perspective. The workshop develops pieces rooted in a search for timelessness, where technical mastery dialogues with an affirmed artistic sensitivity.
