Paper crumpling transforms a simple sheet into unique three-dimensional sculptures, combining aesthetics and living matter. Inheriting the explorations of Paul Jackson and developed since 2000 by Vincent Floderer and CRIMP, crumpling blends origami and sculptural gesture to create bio-inspired forms. Whether chaotic or structured, it opens up largely unexplored artistic and scientific territories.
Over three days, this workshop offers a hands-on immersion, punctuated by guided exercises, demonstrations, and experiments, to learn how to master crumpling and transform paper into living works of art.
Upon completion of the training, the trainee will be able to:
Paper crumpling transforms a simple sheet into unique three-dimensional sculptures, combining aesthetic qualities with tactile sensitivity. Born from the work of Paul Jackson and enriched since 2000 by Vincent Floderer and the CRIMP (Centre de Recherche et d'Intervention en Milieu Pédagogique), this technique combines the art of origami and sculptural gesture to create forms inspired by living things. Whether chaotic or structured, crumpling opens up fascinating, largely unexplored artistic and scientific horizons.
For three days, participants will delve into structured crumpling through progressive exercises, demonstrations, and hands-on experiments. They will discover the main crumpling styles—chaotic, radial, and parallel—learn to manipulate paper with moisture and methylcellulose treatments, and test different types and weights of paper. Each participant will leave with finished pieces, but above all, with the skills and know-how necessary to extend and personalize this technique in their artistic or craft practice. A rare opportunity to breathe life into matter and explore new creative dimensions.
