The Program

Learning objectives

This workshop offers an immersion in the traditional Japanese technique of neriage, which involves blending different clays to create unique marbled patterns. Participants will learn to master the balance between spontaneity and precision, giving rise to rich and poetic textures.

The workshop also includes the inlaying and fusion of colored glass in stoneware, resulting in surfaces with singular plays of light and depth. Each creation thus becomes a harmonious encounter between material, gesture, and light.
Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to create unique tiles and decorative surfaces, designed to enrich interior spaces and awaken the senses, transforming the material into a truly sensory experience.

Upon completion of the training, the trainee will be able to:

  • Create pieces using mixed clays
  • Understand the glass and stoneware fusion process
  • Collaborate on the creation of a shared object
  • Draw and develop an individual design project
  • Understand the different techniques of mixed clays

Content of the program

The mixed-clay technique, inherited from the traditional Japanese craft of duneriage, involves combining different clays of varying colors to create pieces with naturally marbled patterns. During this workshop, participants will discover how to manipulate these clays to design unique tiles and surfaces, where each motif emerges from the spontaneous interplay of colors. Duneriage offers a subtle balance between randomness and control, allowing the material to express its spontaneity while guiding the pattern according to artistic intention. Trainees will learn to play with textures and chromatic variations to highlight the singularity of each creation.

They will also explore the technique of inlaying and fusing colored glass into stoneware. This process combines the mineral density of the clay with the brilliance of recycled glass, which is selected, crushed, and integrated before firing. Participants will experience how this combination creates surfaces with contrasting textures and unique lighting effects, transforming a recycled material into an element of color and depth. Upon completion of this training, each participant will be able to produce pieces where the encounter between stoneware and glass reveals a unique alchemy, enriching the space and awakening the eye.

Details

Lucie le Bouder

Based in Marseille, Lucie Le Bouder designs unique stoneware tiles, conceived to interact with the spaces they grace. Inspired by architecture, volumes, and materials, she creates ornamental surfaces, glazed or unglazed, to enrich interiors with a strong character. Each piece is designed for a specific location, a particular atmosphere, blending function and emotion.

Trained at the Duperré School and the Nantes School of Fine Arts, Lucie began her career in contemporary art, exploring drawing, sculpture, and site-specific installations. After ten years in the arts, she discovered ceramics in 2020 and founded her own studio in 2023, initially in the Drôme region of France, before settling in Marseille. There, she develops experimental techniques, from engraving to inlaying recycled glass into stoneware, playing with material, pattern, and light to create unique textures.

Her approach blends artisanal know-how with artistic sensibility: each tile becomes a decorative or architectural object in its own right, capable of transforming walls, floors, or furniture into living surfaces. Lucie collaborates with architects, designers, and craftspeople, and shares her expertise through teaching and serving on juries in art and architecture schools.
For Lucie Le Bouder, ceramics is much more than a material: it is a language, a gesture, a perspective on space and life. Each creation invites us to feel the material, perceive the light, and experience beauty in everyday life.
