This immersive workshop invites participants to discover and experiment with the “jarre-à-la-corde” (Rope-Wrapped-clay) technique, an ancient craft reimagined in ceramics through the combined use of clay and sisal rope. Guided by internationally renowned ceramic artist Uriel Caspi, participants will explore an approach that is both technical and experimental, developing sculptural forms from modular structures. Focused on practice and experimentation, this workshop offers an intensive learning environment where each participant can enhance their mastery of modeling and large-scale construction.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
In this workshop, the “rope-supported pottery” technique is explored as a method of ceramic creation that combines traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary approach. Inspired by ancient practices in which natural fibers were used to support or shape clay, this technique is now being reimagined by artists to explore new sculptural forms.
It involves using a rope, typically made of a natural fiber such as sisal, as a temporary base structure to build a clay piece. Unlike traditional techniques, the rope allows for defining the initial volume and paves the way for freer forms, particularly for medium- to large-scale works.
Participants first learn to design a modular structure that serves as the foundation for their creation. They then develop their piece by gradually applying rope and clay, thus building sculptural forms in a progressive and intuitive manner. This process encourages experimentation while ensuring the stability of the whole.
During drying and firing, the rope disappears, giving way to the ceramic structure, sometimes enriched with subtle textures resulting from its imprint.
The workshop alternates between demonstrations, theoretical instruction, and hands-on practice to provide a comprehensive understanding of the technique, its origins, and its contemporary applications, regardless of the participants’ initial skill level.
Note: The pieces created will not be fired during the workshop due to the necessary drying time.

Uriel Caspi is an internationally renowned ceramic artist whose work explores the connections between traditional craft techniques and contemporary sculptural practices. Through the creation of large-scale pieces, he develops a unique visual language in which material, structure, and gesture take center stage.
A graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and Alfred University in New York, he trained in international artistic contexts that continue to inform his practice today. His work has been exhibited in numerous institutions and art events around the world, notably in the United States, Europe, Israel, and Japan.
Based in the Netherlands, Uriel Caspi pursues ongoing research into ceramics as a sculptural medium, maintaining a constant dialogue between the legacy of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary experimentation.
