The Program

Learning objectives

A centuries-old decorative art, straw marquetry is a Far Eastern technique similar to wood marquetry. Forgotten for many years, it regained its former glory in the 1930s, notably with the decorator André Groult, who showcased it in many of his creations. His granddaughter, Lison de Caunes, leads this enriching workshop.

At the end of the training, the trainee will be able to:

  • Understand the ancestral techniques of straw marquetry
  • Select and prepare straw
  • Create sophisticated patterns
  • Remember the history of this ancestral technique

Content of the program

This training opens the doors to the little-explored world of straw marquetry, under the exceptional direction of Lison De Caunes, a leading expert in this field. Over the course of a week, each participant will discover the ancestral techniques that bring this refined form of artistic expression to life.

Participants will explore the subtleties of using straw to create sophisticated patterns that have adorned works of art and sumptuous objects throughout history.

The course will include the careful selection and preparation of straw, as well as an understanding of its various shades of color and texture.

Participants will be guided in the delicate art of assembling and creating patterns from straw, transforming surfaces into creative outlets.

Beyond technical skills, participants will have the opportunity to explore the history and cultural significance of straw marquetry. They will discover how this art has evolved through the ages and cultures, contributing to the enrichment of craftsmanship and interior decoration.

with Lison de Caunes
Details

After studying at the Union centrale des Arts décoratifs, Lison de Caunes devoted herself to the art of straw marquetry, thus perpetuating the tradition of her grandfather, the decorator André Groult. Having become a specialist in this technique, she rehabilitates these poetic practices by restoring furniture and objects from the 17th century to the Art Deco period. She has organized several exhibitions, written books on straw marquetry and participated in numerous events to highlight this humble and luxurious material that illuminates the most contemporary furniture with its shimmer. She creates commissioned furniture, home accessories and wall panels for decorators and interior designers. In 2015, she launched Lison de Caunes Créations, her own line of straw marquetry furniture.
